Fraunhofer-Institut für Windenergie und Energiesystemtechnik
Fraunhofer IWES was founded at the start of 2009 through the merger of the former Fraunhofer Center for Wind Energy and Maritime Engineering CWMT in Bremerhaven and the Institut für Solare Energieversorgungstechnik ISET e.V. in Kassel. In order to cope with the tasks of the "Energiewende", Fraunhofer IWES has grown considerably in recent years. There were 200 staff members in 2009 compared with almost 500 in 2012. Further expansion is essential and planned. The necessary structures for this expansion will be created in business year 2013. An example of this is the formation, in the north-west, of a wind energy research association by DLR, ForWind and Fraunhofer IWES. Together with the authorities in the State of Hesse and the city of Kassel, planning is on-going for a new, large institute building in Kassel.
IWES's Role in ELECTRA IRP:
Fraunhofer IWES is active on the side in the development of Joint Research Facilities. On the other hand Fraunhofer IWES is going to develop scenarios and case studies for future power system operation with the focus on dynamic frequency control. Using its extensive laboratory environment of SysTec and DeMoTec, new control algorithms, developed and implemented by the ELECTRA consortium, are tested and evaluated by Fraunhofer IWES.
